The Otis Report on the Creative Economy comes from the LA based Otis College of Art and Design.
The report covers the creative economy in California. And as their chart below shows, it's big.
The study does a good job capturing self-employed creatives. This is important because independent workers comprise a large share of the creative workforce. Key quote from the report:
"In certain sectors, self-employment is more common than wage and salary employment. In the visual and performing arts, there were over 2.3 self-employed persons in Los Angeles County for every salaried worker ... The communication arts also had a high number of self-employed workers relative to salaried employees: In 2015, there were 0.6 self-employed persons in Los Angeles County for every salaried employee."
We spend a lot of time studying self-employment in the creative industries. The reason is simple. These industries are in many ways leading the shift to independent work.
Because of this, the Otis report is well worth reading - even if you're not from California.
