Xerox Iridesse Production Press Lengthens Xerox’s Digital Printing Lead

By Gregory PingsXerox Forum

Approximately one out of five people who talked about Xerox on May 9 talked about our Iridesse™ Production Press. I’d call that a darn-good product launch.

The Hollywood-like reveal, before a standing-room only customer event in Webster, New York, allows Xerox to ante-up our conversations with print providers, designers and marketers. Iridesse is the first digital press that combines four-color printing (CMYK) with up to two specialty dry inks in one printing pass. The specialty inks include metallic gold or silver as well as clear dry ink. Iridesse gives print providers an immediate competitive edge in the growing print market, and no one else has a digital press like it.

“Iridesse’s one-pass capability, for incorporating metallics and varnishes combined with run-time quality control technology is a differentiator for Xerox,” according to Ron Gilboa, group director, Production Technology, Keypoint Intelligence-InfoTrends who was quoted in a Xerox press release. “[Iridesse] can give print providers a competitive advantage.”

Describe the Xerox Iridesse Production Press. How about “wow” or “commodity-crushing” or “dazzle”?

Click To Tweet

More than a high speed color digital press, Iridesse breaks new ground in an industry we lead; it pushes the limits of CMYK, automation, timelines and budgets. “Our Color Reignited” features all of our color presses, and it happens to be an apt description of the value and new opportunities that Iridesse delivers. Moreover, Iridesse’ brilliant “wow” factor takes customers beyond their imaginations. This word cloud shows some of the more popular words and phrases people tweeted and retweeted to describe Iridesse during an Iridesse unveiling event at the Xerox Forum in Warsaw, Poland.

Xerox ForumI think it’s kind of cool that industry insiders actually said “wow” – a lot.

Customer testimonial: Glen Robins, managing director of IPW1 in London, shows off some of the stunning prints he’s able to produce with Iridesse.

Meet Iridesse

Iridesse Helps Turn Strategy into Action

Xerox Forum
Iridesse is part of our strategy to capture growth in production color, which is one of four high-growth segments that Xerox pursues. This launch extends our digital portfolio and lengthens our lead in xerographic imaging quality with technology. Competitors have yet to match it. In the meantime, Iridesse has something for every business:

Commercial Printers: New levels of automation. High definition toner, in addition to our metallic and clear toners bring in more diverse, higher-value jobs. Volume and profitability both go up.

In-Plant Printers: Cements their organizational value by keeping more jobs – and more dollars – within their walls.

Marketers: Makes highly embellished, personalized print a legitimate player in omni-channel campaigns.

Designers: Brings the craft of “wow” printing to digital, reviving design possibilities that timelines and budgets would normally kill off.

Iridesse technology: Take a look at the technology behind Iridesse, including HD EA toner, precise image registration, and specialty embellishments.

Iridesse launch kicks-off sales

Aside from the fact that we unveiling a game-changing product that helps print providers move into a growing market, the launch event included presentations, a customer panel, product demos and an augmented reality application gallery. Add to that a May 22 reveal at The Xerox Forum in Warsaw, Poland, and you get quite a lot of buzz.

Following the Xerox Forum, Xerox International Operations president Herve Tessler announced the first of Xerox Forumseveral orders for Iridesse around the world. Early adopters have already made their purchases, persuaded by the outstanding print quality, incredible metallic effects that will improve an existing product line, opportunities in packaging and commercial printing, as well as the 5th and 6th specialty color stations on Iridesse.

Early reports: What they’re saying about Iridesse

Early reports from the trade press are positive. Here’s a sample.

The Imaging Channel — Digital Production Print Just Became Very Exciting: “Never one to avoid the bling,” Patricia Ames, senior analyst for BPO Media, said about the samples that Xerox mailed to attendees prior Xerox Forumto the Webster launch event. “We were impressed with some of the art — the dry ink and metallic embellishments create some pretty luxurious results that seem well positioned to give print providers an edge in a competitive market.”

Matbaa Teknik Online Magazine — Shiny Prints Are Now Digital (Translated): “The Xerox Iridesse Production Press looks to us as an important development that offers significant advantages to produce even more valuable prints in the most demanding types of digital printing. Especially in a single pass, it went into recording as a convenience that goes beyond conventional printing with all the printing finishing.”

Printing Impressions — Xerox Launches Iridesse Digital Press: In an overview of the launch event in Webster, this article includes insights from customers, including Glen Robins, sales director of London-based IPW1. This print provider has beta tested the Iridesse for the past several months. “With Iridesse,” Glen said, “we can create remarkable and eye-catching ads, cards and posters with a simple setup and at high speeds. It’s a clear differentiator for us and it is what our customers are looking for. I’ve been in the print trade for 35 years now and I’ve never known a digital machine like it.”

Print Monthly.com — Xerox pledges to drive new business with Iridesse:  Reviewing insights about the market and Iridesse’s new capabilities that Xerox executives provided at the Webster launch, the article notes Xerox ForumGlen’s observation that the capability to add metallic and clear toner embellishments opens up opportunities to transform the print market. “For high end clients,” Glen noted, “output that used to be done with lithography, foiling or embossing can now be done in a single pass, in fast turnaround times and at a low cost [with this digital press.]”

Poligrafika — Xerox introduces Iridesse Production Press (translated): “Xerox Iridesse Production Press is the only digital production machine that prints in shades of metallic gold and silver using dry toner, in the form of CMYK, and also through transparent, dry ink during one pass.”

PrintWeek — Single-pass CMYK+ digital press revealed by Xerox: “Demand for printing beyond CMYK has exploded recently – forecasts indicate [the print embellishment market] will grow by 25 billion pages by 2020,” Ragni Mehta, Xerox Cut Sheet Business vice president and general manager was quoted. “We know that customers are willing to pay premiums of almost 90% for the added embellishments it can present.” Iridesse uses our High Definition Emulsion Aggregate toner. The toner’s optimal particle size produces prints with lower gloss, smooth tints and fine detail.

Graphische Revue — Iridescent special effects in digital printing (translated):  “Xerox Iridesse’s ability to produce metallic inks and clear dry ink in an automated workflow, as well as real-time quality monitoring, is a differentiator for Xerox and can improve the competitiveness of print providers.”

Printing Impressions — Marketing ROI Is in Your Past: Return on investment (ROI) never stops being important, especially when you consider that all email, What’sApp and Twitter users combined send nearly 190 million messages every 60 seconds. This is one of the reasons why direct mail response rates outperform digital by nearly two times, and why print achieves 30 percent more recall than digital. Print engages more of our senses, and helps consumers achieve more emotional engagements with brands. “Xerox’s … new Iridesse production press allows printers to more beautifully and easily use metallic prints to further engage our visual senses and the emotions that result from exposure to shiny new objects,” Jeanette McMurtry, a psychology-based marketing expert wrote.

A full court press for Iridesse

In addition to the launch in Webster and the unveiling in Warsaw, Xerox will host regional and global customer events. Watch for one near you. Our customers will also see our advertising in major graphic communications print publications, as well as digital and social media marketing.

Bringing a pioneering product to market is what we do best. With Iridesse, Xerox has, yet again, reignited color and unleashed new opportunities for our customers.

To Sit or Stand: Is That the Question?

By Linda Weitzel, Senior Ergonomist, Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability, Xerox

Linda Weitzel

Linda Weitzel, senior ergonomist, Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability for Xerox.

Whether ’tis healthier to work sitting or standing is a question, that as an ergonomist, I get asked often. While the answer requires no soliloquy, it isn’t a simple yes or no question, either.

Articles published nearly a decade ago, comparing the negative health effects of sitting to those of smoking or suggesting your chair is out to kill you, drove the now popular sit versus stand debate. Before that, sitting was primarily linked to discomfort or pain for those with pre-existing back issues.

Anatomy 101

Ideally, the spine has outward and inward curves that form a slight S. This shape acts as a shock absorber and provides structural support to keep us upright. Sitting flattens the lower curve of our spine and changes the overall shape into a C, placing uneven force on the vertebra and stretching the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, creating fatigue. Doctors started recommending that individuals with serious back pain/injury start to stand more, including at work. For this population, standing workstations were a solution to a very painful dilemma.

7 tips to make your desk job more active, and healthier.

Click To Tweet

The introduction of the personal computer allows (requires?) office workers to always be working – and in most cases, sitting –  at their computer. Using email, search engines, instant messaging, and more limits our movement. Many office workers even eat lunch at their computer so they can get more work done.

All this sitting is not only changing the shape of the spine, it is increasing sedentary behavior. Why is that important? Because sedentary behavior is directly linked to increases in cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, diabetes and obesity. (Read: Physical inactivity a leading cause of disease and disability, warns [the  World Health Organization].)

Ergonomics and workstations: More to know from ergonomist Linda Weitzel.

7 ways to make your desk job healthier

In general, any kind of movement is what’s best for the body. Therefore, the real question is not, should I sit or should I stand, rather how do I get more movement into my day. If introducing standing into your work day will allow you to move more, do it. Just remember that standing can exacerbate an underlying health condition. And for those tasks that require a high level of concentration, you may want to sit.

Here are some simple ideas for adding movement into your day:

  1. Stand to answer your telephone.
  2. Sanding or walking meetings.
  3. Get your documents right away when you send them to the printer.
  4. Walk to a co-worker’s desk and have a face to face conversation (gasp!) rather than sending an email or an instant message.
  5. Go for a walk or run errands during your lunch hour.
  6. Drink lots of water.
  7. Alternate between sitting and standing to work.

Recommendations vary about how much movement, or how much less sitting we should do every day. Perhaps the best advice is to stand up, take a deep breath and walk over to a co-worker to share and discuss this article.

Aspiring Engineers Dream of Tomorrow’s Solutions

By Steve Hoover, Chief Technology Officer

Xerox Science Consultant Program

Engineering Structures is our most popular Science Consultant kit.

(Photo above: At the Science Challenge Day, Professor Beaker (at left) is played by John Moore. Superhero Einstein is played by Gene Rogalski. Both (Moore and Rogalski) are Xerox engineers and Science Consultants.)

What do 100,000 straws, 75,000 paperclips, 135 aspiring engineers and 65 student inventors have in common?  The Xerox Science Challenge Day, of course!

More than 200 elementary school students visited our Webster, New York, campus to showcase skills and knowledge they acquired from the Xerox Science Consultant Program.  The program partners Xerox people volunteer in elementary school classrooms throughout the Rochester City and Webster Central school districts, and present monthly hands-on science lessons that are designed to excite and inspire the students.  In short, the Xerox Science Consultants demonstrate cool stuff that could have a lasting impact on these budding engineers and scientists.  The goal is to show how exciting science can be, and help them believe that a career in a STEM-related field is desirable and attainable.

What will your child invent? Here’s how to encourage brilliant, young minds today so they can develop tomorrow’s solutions.

Xerox and our communities

The Global Citizenship Report shows how we continue to help people, communities and the planet grow and thrive.

It’s incredible to see what these young people are capable of at such a young age. What I love about visiting Science Challenge day is the look on the kids’ faces when they stress-test their structure or pitch their invention.  They are truly excited about what they’re doing, and I’m delighted that they are translating what they learned in the classroom to the real world solutions and possibilities.  To me, knowing that Xerox has a part in that is both fulfilling and uplifting.  It says we’re doing the right things in our community.

Engineering competition and invention convention

Xerox Scieme Consultant Program

The medicine dispenser concept was created by a fourth grader, because his grandmother has arthritis and can’t open her medication.

The annual event comprises two competitions, an engineering structures competition and an invention convention.  Both are judged by Xerox engineers and scientists, as well as senior leaders and community influencers.

The structures competition was the culmination of basic engineering concepts that our 80 Science Consultants taught over several months. That’s where all those straws and paperclips come in. Students who win in-class competitions tweak their structures to bear maximum weight while using minimal materials. On Science Challenge Day, when the stress-test produces the inevitable loud crash, the students were both gleeful and apprehensive as they waited for the judges’ results.

Xerox Science Consultant Program

Jim Frankunas, a Xerox engineer and Science Consultant, examines an idea for a new product.

The Invention Convention challenged students to solve a problem, improve an existing product, or imagine something that only a creative spirit could conceive. They built displays and prototypes, and perfected their pitches.   Only a few nerves were frazzled as spectators and judges visited to take in these creations.

Demonstrations by the Rochester Engineering Society, Xerox-sponsored F.I.R.S.T. robotics teams and experts from the Rochester Museum and Science Center added fun and excitement. And, oh yeah, R2D2 dropped by with his friends, and I was lucky to grab a picture with them. After pizza and cookies, students left with dozens of ribbons, t-shirts, and take home science kits to encourage their interest throughout the summer.

My hope is that Xerox people left with feelings of accomplishment and pride. I know I did.

Five Things That Inspire Xerox People

By Erin Gillard

Erin Gillard

Erin Gillard joined Xerox in 2015 and manages employee communications for Xerox’s Canadian operations.

One of the things I love most about my job at Xerox is that I get to work with people in various groups and lines of business. They give me a sneak peek into the innovations they’re working on, how they’re solving business problems for our customers, and how they keep the engine of our business running.

Sometimes we get so busy with the day-to-day that we don’t stop to reflect on who we are as an organization, and why we work so hard to make Xerox succeed. Here are five things about Xerox and Xerox people that inspire me.

Xerox people love Xerox

Xerox people are proud of Xerox. I recently worked on an external award application and each person I spoke to when hunting down information immediately got excited about the project. I was getting emails at 10 p.m. saying “I just remembered! You should include this!” Everyone had a story to tell about why they came to Xerox, why they stay at Xerox, and why they genuinely believe this is a great place to grow their careers. Their pride fuels this organization. We believe in Xerox, so we make it succeed. This is our secret sauce and what makes Xerox so unique.

What do you love about your job? Here are five things that Xerox people love.

We are innovating for the future

Valerie Farrugia and Barkev Keoshkerian.

The Xerox Research Centre of Canada achieved it’s 2,500th U.S. patent, thanks to senior research scientists Valerie Farrugia and Barkev Keoshkerian.

Xerox PARC is famous for their innovations in the tech industry and was an early pioneer of so many tech inventions that we today take for granted. As an innovation junkie, I am always inspired by the incredible work Xerox is doing in all of our research centers around the world. For example, at the Gil Hatch Centre for Customer Innovation in Webster, New York – the world’s largest digital print showcase – our researchers work every day on new innovations to better serve our customers. In Aubagne, France, researchers at our IMPIKA Inkjet Innovation Centre develop, industrialize and manufacture inkjet printing solutions. They give a Xerox answer to the questions about the ever-changing print market standards and opportunities.

As a Canadian, I am especially proud of the Xerox Research Centre of Canada in Mississauga, Ontario. Talented minds are connecting the physical and digital worlds, and building the future of tomorrow – today. Xerox is the only company in our industry that invests in research and development in Canada, and I love how we are inventing for the future.

Who needs yoga? We’re so flexible

Things like working from home, flex hours and time off check a lot of boxes here. At Xerox, you can work from anywhere and still be successful, which is a major advantage for the younger generation that’s entering our workforce right now. As I write this, I am in a coffee shop editing a newsletter for employees. Earlier I was on a video conference from my office in Toronto, Ontario with my colleagues in Norwalk, Connecticut, and Rochester, New York, who I’ve never met face to face, but who I feel like I know personally. The freedom to balance my personal life with my professional life makes me happier and more successful.

Pete Peterson

Pete Peterson, Senior Vice President of Global Channel Strategy, and his team celebrate the Channelnomics Innovation Award for Global Partner Program of the Year.

Diversity is a big deal here

Diversity has been a hot topic for many years, but at Xerox, we don’t just talk the diversity talk – we are actively committed to ensuring that every voice is heard. This commitment began in the 1960’s during the civil rights movement. As our society and company evolve, our work here is never done. I spoke with the incredible Beverly Stallings-Johnson, who manages our Global Diversity and Inclusion programs, to understand the full scope of our diversity engagement. It ranges from ensuring we have minority and female representation for senior roles through the Wilson Rule, to guaranteeing the diversity of our suppliers and vendors. If you haven’t visited the Global Diversity and Inclusion page on Xerox.com, take a look and learn more about our D&I practices.

Xerox Science Consultants

At a Xerox-hosted invention convention for grade school children, Jim Frankunas, a Xerox engineer and Science Consultant, examines “Slather Sizzle,” which will help keep your barbecue grill clean.

We care about our communities and the environment

I’ve always been active in my community as a volunteer, so it’s important for me to work at a company that cares about giving back. What I love about our corporate giving strategy is that Xerox people are active decision makers in which causes the company supports. The results here are too impressive not to share. Over the past two years, Canadian operations donated more than $1.2 million to our communities, and our people gave over 4,980 hours of volunteer time – that’s about 620 work days. In 2017, U.S. employees volunteered more than 100,000 hours for the causes that matter to them.

Xerox, our communities and the environment

Caring for Communities: From its beginning, Xerox has supported the communities in which we work and live.

Our Sustainability Commitment: This briefing paper shows how Xerox balances the social, environmental, and economic needs of business today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs.

Environment, Health, Safety & Sustainability at Xerox: We work with our suppliers, customers and stakeholders to maintain the highest standards for preserving our environment, and protect enhance the health and safety of our employees and communities

Our sustainability story is also amazing. As an early champion of environmental sustainability, Xerox is an

Xerox People

ConnectKey, a powerful technology from Xerox that helps collaborators communicate, connect and work from anywhere.

ENERGY STAR Charter Partner. That means we helped define the standards for energy-saving attributes for imaging equipment product certification more than 25 years ago, and we still help ENERGY STAR define standards. I’m also especially proud of how we help our customers achieve their sustainability goals through programs like the Print ReLeaf partnership. Here in Canada, more than half of our offices are LEED Gold or BOMA certified. We truly are creating positive impacts for our communities and our planet.

All of these things remind me that Xerox is a great place to work. I love that we are always evolving and innovating and finding new ways to help our customers to work better – and that’s why I am so proud to be a Xeroid.

Emergencies Don’t Have a Plan, but You Should

By Brian Ayers

Brian Ayers

Brian K. Ayers, Senior Safety Engineer

Emergencies and disasters can strike anyone, anywhere and at any time. A workplace emergency can threaten employees, customers, or the public, and disrupt or shut down operations. It can also cause physical or environmental damage.

There are three main emergencies that require every employee to take action:

  1. A fire or other immediate danger, which requires evacuation.
  2. External incident, such as a radiological accident or civil disturbance that requires shelter in place.
  3. An active shooter. These incidents are unpredictable and evolve quickly.

The best response – no matter the emergency – is to prepare for it before it happens. Few people can think clearly and logically in a crisis, so it is important to prepare in advance when you have time to be thorough.

Fire? Severe weather? Active shooter? Do you and your employees know what to do? Here’s how to plan.

Click To Tweet

Organizations that focus on implementing comprehensive emergency action plans (EAPs) are better prepared for the unexpected. They reach a level of performance where the impact of an unplanned event is controlled and minimized by design.

Health and safety programs at Xerox

Environment, health, safety and sustainability at Xerox: Learn how we align our goals for the environment, health and safety in five key areas to make an impact across our value chain worldwide.

Health and safety is a value demonstrated through programs, emergency preparedness and maintaining strict standards.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says it best: “Well-developed emergency plans and proper employee training will result in fewer and less-severe employee injuries, and less structural damage to the facility during emergencies.”

At Xerox, every facility with 10 or more employees has a site-specific EAPs.  Each plan contains specific procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.

Get up and get out

To prepare for an emergency requiring a building evacuation, know the location of the two nearest emergency exits. Your building’s emergency map will show you the location of all the exits out of your building, the location of fire alarm pull stations, and the location of your outside assembly area.

If you are the person who first identifies an emergency requiring evacuation, initiate the evacuation alarm by pulling the fire alarm pull station – typically located near a building exit – then exit the building. Once outside, call your local emergency number and request assistance.

All other employees should:

  • Remain calm and move quickly; do not take time to collect your belongings.
  • Use the stairs rather than the elevator.
  • Walk to the nearest exit, assist those with special needs, if possible, and close doors behind you.
  • Wait at your outside assembly area for an all-clear, and report anyone who is missing.

Shelter-in-place (SIP)

Sheltering-in-place is a precaution designed for those emergencies in which it is safer to remain in the building than to evacuate. Generally, shelter-in-place means taking refuge in an interior room to await further instructions, or until the emergency passes.

Situations that may require sheltering-in-place include severe weather, a chemical release outside of the building, or an act of violence outside of the building.

To prepare for a SIP emergency, refer to your building’s emergency map, and note the location of your building’s safe zone(s), which will always be on the interior of the building, away from outside walls and windows.

If you hear your building’s SIP alarm or notification:

  • Close chemical containers and all exterior dock doors before going to the safe zone, as long as it can be done quickly and poses no risk.
  • Walk calmly. If possible, bring personal items such as emergency phone numbers and medications.
  • Do not exit the building.
  • Report to your manager or supervisor upon arrival at the safe zone.
  • Follow the instructions of those managing the emergency. Re-enter your work area only when directed to do so.

Active shooter: What can you do?

An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in harming or attempting to harm people in a confined and populated area. In most cases, active shooters have no pattern or method to their selection of victims.

Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. Typically, the immediate deployment of law enforcement is required to stop the shooting and mitigate harm to victims.

Because active shooter situations are often over quickly, even before law enforcement arrives on the scene, you should always be mentally and physically prepared to deal with an active shooter situation — above all, stay calm and chose one of three options.

  1. If there is an accessible escape path, leave your belongings behind and get out, helping others if possible. Once outside, prevent anyone from entering the building. When you are safe, call 911. Always keep your hands visible and follow the instructions of emergency personnel.
  2. If evacuation is not possible, find a place to hide where the active shooter is less likely to find you, and where you won’t be trapped in case you are found. Lock and blockade the door with heavy furniture, if it is available. Hide behind large objects, silence your electronic device(s) and remain quiet. If neither evacuation nor hiding is possible, dial 911 if you are able to alert police to the shooter’s location. If speaking aloud will put you in danger, leave the line open and allow the dispatcher to listen.
  3. As a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger, attempt to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter by acting as aggressively as possible. Throw or use anything you can find as a weapon; yell and create chaos. If possible, call 911 and leave the line open so the dispatcher can listen.

What to do at home

Many of the emergencies that happen in the workplace can also happen at home. Make sure your family is prepared:

  • Create and practice a home evacuation plan (EDITH – Exit Drill In The Home).
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car and at least three days of food and water at home. Don’t forget food and supplies for your pets.
  • Store important documents in a fire-proof safe or safe deposit box — or scan them.
  • Learn first aid and CPR.
  • Know how to shut off your utilities.
  • Memorize family members’ phone numbers.
  • Practice your emergency plan regularly.

Emergencies and disasters are unpredictable and strike without warning. Preparation is key to your ability to respond to an emergency at work or at home.

Digital Printers and Digital Workflows

By Karl Boissonneault

Karl Boissonneault

Karl Boissonneault, Vice President, Channel Partners Group, Xerox Canada.

Printing doesn’t have to be complicated, but, let’s face it: For every user who wants something different from that machine, the complexity increases. What started as printing a piece of paper has grown to two-sided printing, imaging, multiple paper weights and colors, faxing, scanning, mobile printing – the list goes on, it grows daily.

Is it any wonder how printers, copiers and workflows got so complicated?

While the engineers and designers focus on how to make technical stuff work, the users are left to figure out how these multiple functions can make their work simpler, quicker and efficient. The good news is that the technology does all of this.

Your printer has multiple roles, which means it may be the final step in a process, or it could be an onramp to a digital workflow. Regardless, your printer makes a difference in your costs, your customer’s experience, data security and productivity.

The bridge between digital and physical workflows – your printer! Learn how:

The average worker can spend as much as three minutes waiting for a print job from a central printer. All that time adds up, which is why we say “workplace assistants” when we talk about the next generation of Xerox printers. Built-in tools help you boost productivity with features like:

  • Installation wizards to guide non-technical users through set up.
  • Preview of scans and faxes at the user interface.
  • Optical Character Recognition for scanned documents that are searchable.
  • Access to popular cloud-based services, like DropBox, Easy Translator and many more customized apps.

Liberate your workflows

Xerox ConnectKey Technology gives you the freedom to solve problems, be more sustainable and productive and take on new challenges.

Check out the VersaLink family for small workgroups, and the AltaLink family for midsize to large workgroups.

Printer apps and digital workflows

That last point, customized apps, are the key better workflows. Apps make it easier to use devices as part of digital workflows to the cloud and other platforms and applications. Moreover, users can expand device functionality simply by adding capabilities from an ever-expanding app gallery, or build their own apps. The result is less time at the printer, and work that flows from the physical world into the digital realm more efficiently, gets completed a lot faster, and is fulfilled more accurately.

Printer apps redefine how work gets done

On Demand Webinar: Learn how apps turn multifunction printers into workplace assistants. (30 minutes)

Learn more about Xerox ConnectKey printer apps on Xerox.com. There’s always room for great work and collaboration.

And the vendors who sell these devices have gone “next generation” too. Our most successful channel partners create customized apps that help their customers work better, and make their printers more convenient.

Your multifunction printer can help you work better, faster, smarter — and cut down on wasted staff time and energy at the same time. Existing paper-based processes can be converted easily to digital — and back — for faster, more efficient service. For instance, a contract could be generated and populated online, printed out for a client’s signature, and then scanned back into the system.

Our next-generation multifunction printers represent a vital component of information flow, which is the lifeblood of organizations in the knowledge economy.

Visit the Xerox App Gallery and see what your printer can do when you install the right tools. Or contact your Xerox channel partner or reseller.

This is why owners of small- and medium-sized businesses need a more critical eye when they assess new print devices. The right one will help them harness the power of new technology.

Fact No. 1: Veterans who return to civilian life find opportunities – as well as challenges.

Fact No. 2: Xerox’s Global Talent Acquisition team is always on the lookout for new avenues to connect with people.

“Last year, Xerox more veterans in various positions throughout the United States, and is on track to reach our aspirational goal of 6 percent for the full year,” said Neal Krisko, Director Global Talent Acquisition. “A large part of this success is due to the efforts of our talent acquisition team as well as outreach to resource groups such as Veteran Career Services, Office of Veteran and Military Affairs, and National Chamber of Commerce: Hiring Our Heroes, and more.”

It just makes good business sense to hire veterans. Xerox has a focused program, a strong commitment, and a long history of military recruitment that encourages veterans to apply for positions throughout the company. We actively seek job applicants who are transitioning military, retired military personnel, and veterans with disabilities. In addition, we hire military spouses and family members for job opportunities at Xerox. Over the years Xerox has partnered with veteran recruiting programs such as the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP), White House Joining Forces Initiative, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, “HiringOurHeroes” Career Fairs.

10 Xerox Trivia Questions

By Gregory Pings

“This photocopier company ran an ad stating that its brand is not a noun or a verb and cannot be pluralized.”

That was a pretty good question. (And this is not the first time I wrote about the word “Xerox.”)

I have 10 more Xerox trivia questions that might help Alex Trebek put a contestant over the top – or make way for a new champion.

10 Xerox trivia questions that might stump a Jeopardy! champ. #Jeopardy #Trivia

Click To Tweet

When was Xerox founded?

Xerox was founded as The Haloid Company in 1906 in Rochester, N.Y. The tiny company manufactured photographic paper.

What was the first xerographic product named?

The first (and uninspiring) name of the first xerographic product was the Model A, which was followed by Model B, Model C, Model D. These manual products were time-consuming and cumbersome, but they brought in just enough revenue to fuel Haloid’s development of a fully-automatic and easy-to-use machine that would quickly produce a perfect copy at the press of a button.

When did Haloid launch the first fully automatic xerographic machine?

To correct answer is 1955. “Wait, what?”, you say? “Didn’t this blog report the 914 copier’s first-ever commercial installation in 1960?” Yes, we did, and – yes — this is a trick question.

The CopyFlo, which produced enlarged prints on a continuous roll from microfilm originals, was launched in 1955. It was the first fully automatic xerographic machine. The 914, introduced four years later, was the first fully automatic, plain paper xerographic machine that produced copies from hard copy. This is the machine that launched a billion-dollar market, and transformed the then-tiny Haloid Company into the global, Fortune 500 Xerox Corporation.

Who was the first musical group to broadcast live video and audio on the internet?

Lawrence Welk. No, just kidding. The correct answer is Severe Tire Damage. They were the first musical group to broadcast live video and audio on the internet, using the experimental Mbone (multicast backbone) for IP Multicast. The live performance was hosted at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) in 1993.

When was the laser printer invented?

Gary Starkweather invented the laser printer in 1969 while working at a Xerox research lab in Webster, N.Y. Soon after, he transferred to the newly opened Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). There he developed a prototype that eventually provided the guts of the first laser printer – the Xerox 9700 – which was launched in 1977.

How much was the monthly rental charge for the 914 copier?

Xerox charged $95 a month to rent the 914 copier when the product was launched in 1959. The price included 2,000 free copies. Each additional copy cost 4 cents, and the contract included a 15-day cancellation clause.

Innovation and innovators at Xerox

What was The Amateur Chemists’ Press?

Ever the high school nerd, the future inventor of xerography, Chester Carlson, created The Amateur Chemists’ Press, while he was in high school. It was a magazine for science-minded high school students. The price for a six-month subscription was 65 cents. Chet worked for a local printer, from whom he acquired a small printing press in return for his labor. He used the press to publish his magazine.

“I don’t think I printed two issues,” Chet later recalled,” and they weren’t much. However, this experience did impress me with the difficulty of getting words into hard copy, and this, in turn, started me thinking about duplicating processes. I started a little inventor’s notebook, and I would jot down ideas from time to time.”

Where did Chester Carlson go to school?

Chester Carlson, the inventor of xerography, received a degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology, and a law degree from New York Law School.

Who was Chester Carlson’s lab assistant in Queens, N.Y.?

Otto Kornei, a physicist who immigrated to the United States from Austria, agreed to work for Carlson for $90 a month, and an expense budget of approximately 30 cents a day.

What was the name that Chester Carlson bestowed on his invention?

Chester Carlson chose “electrophotography,” because he believed it was more technically accurate, and fit better in technical parlance. The term “xerography” was coined in 1948 at the direction of then-Haloid president Joseph C. Wilson.

How Safety and Wellness Are Related

Wellness at Xerox By Sandi Alexander Tuttle

Employers (like Xerox) are responsible to provide a safe and healthy work environment for all of its workers. Similarly, employees share this responsibility by recognizing and respecting known hazards, reporting potential hazards, and following all safe work practices.

Sounds simple. Is there anything else?

Yes! Your overall health and wellness is also an important factor in workplace safety. Whether you work in a manufacturing facility, an office or some other type of work environment there is a chance that you may sustain an injury.

Consider some of the factors that may contribute to workplace injury and recovery rate:

  • Age (aging workforce).
  • Rising obesity levels.
  • Declining fitness levels.
  • Sedentary lifestyle.
  • Poor eating habits.
  • Prevalence of flexed or bent postures in everyday life.

Are you doing it wrong? Here’s what you don’t know about wellness and workplace safety.

Click To Tweet

Studies show that high health risks, such as smoking, poor nutrition and inactivity, contribute to an increase in injuries. An overweight, out-of-shape person places more stress on her joints and soft tissue, generally fatigues faster, and may use poor body mechanics due to lack of strength and/or flexibility. Factor in the repetitive or sustained demands of many work tasks, and it is no wonder that workplace injuries continue to concern employers and employees.

Despite this discouraging-sounding information, there are things you can do.

Health and safety programs at Xerox

Health and safety is a value demonstrated through programs, emergency preparedness and maintaining strict standards.

Environment, health, safety and sustainability at Xerox: Learn how we align our goals for the environment, health and safety in five key areas to make an impact across our value chain worldwide.

Working in wellness

Wellness can be defined as “the lifelong process of becoming aware of and making healthy lifestyle choices.”

A person who regularly makes healthy lifestyle choices is much less likely to sustain an injury, reduces his risks for premature illness, is better able to manage stress and is generally happier. Healthy lifestyle choices include the following:

  • Sleep seven to eight hours per night.
  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Achieve and maintain a normal weight.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Don’t smoke.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation — or not at all.

If you aren’t practicing some or all of these healthy lifestyle habits, you should take steps to work them in.Just don’t try to make the changes all at once!  In fact, even small changes, like a modest 10 percent decrease in your weight, taking a short walk during your lunch break or with the family after work, changing work postures or bringing healthy snacks or your lunch to work most days can have a positive impact on your overall health and reduce the stress on your joints.

 Learn more about healthy living

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published this list of tips and insights that will help you live healthy.

Four tips to prevent injury

Workplace safety and wellness are absolutely related. Preventive measures that include all of the following can minimize the frequency and recurrence of injuries. Oftentimes, they can prevent injuries altogether, and help you enjoy a healthier, safer life at work and at home:

  • Respect known hazards, report potential hazards, and follow safe work practices.
  • Seek out ergonomic help to reduce or eliminate risk factors that can contribute to injury.
  • Learn and practice healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Use the available programs and tools to improve and maintain your overall health.

See How We Design for Accessibility

Jerry Blazek, Creative Director, Xerox Digital Marketing

Maybe you’ve never heard of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), but global accessibility has a long, proud history at Xerox. Accessibility is about providing universal access—meaning anyone who wants to access information can do it, regardless of platform or physical ability.

It’s Global Accessibility Awareness Day. See how we design for accessibility.

Digital Accessibility

We bake accessibility into our digital experiences. Whether it’s a new marketing website for the Xerox® Iridesse® Production Press, or a list of product specs, our goal is to make content available to all users—including those with visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive and neurological disabilities.

Ultimately, we want to help users navigate and find content, and make that content easier to see and hear. We try to eliminate barriers and improve access for all.

Accessible Products, Software and Apps

Our product and software designers are intimately familiar with creating printers, apps and software interfaces that are accessible to individuals with disabilities. They don’t just design to meet regulatory standards, but rather to satisfy all of our customers’ needs. That’s because customers are at the center of everything we do.

Xerox People Take a Day Off for Their Communities

By Elissa Nesbitt

Steve Hoover

“I always tell everyone how proud I am of the passion Xerox people bring to their work, and seeing their outstanding efforts today proves it.” — Steve Hoover, Chief Technology Officer.

The people of Xerox are deeply connected to the communities where we live and work.  We do our part to protect our planet and improve the lives of people around us.  There’s no better example of this than what happened yesterday at United Way of Greater Rochester’s Day of Caring.

“What a great day I had giving back to our community,” said Steve Hoover, Chief Technology Officer for Xerox. “ I always tell everyone how proud I am of the passion Xerox people bring to their work, and seeing their outstanding efforts today proves it. The demonstration of teamwork, the friendships and the compassion is truly heartwarming.  It’s a great way to give back and reminds me of what makes Xerox a great company still – our people and their commitment to have a positive impact on our customers and our community.”

Steve pitched in with three Day of Caring projects in Webster, N.Y., part of more than 500 people who participated in and around Monroe County.  We mulched, weeded, painted, packed supplies and pitched in to spruce up camps, community centers, schools and other non-profits.

The Office of General Counsel sent 15 current and retired employees to Camp Cory for the 7th year. The lawyers, paralegals and staff built a bridge, stained furniture, painted, and weeded around the camp, and overall made it camper-ready.  Camp Cory, a branch of the YMCA of Greater Rochester (N.Y.), offers families a variety of different activities and experiences that they can’t get anywhere else, not the least of which is a natural environment free of electronics and smartphones. Offerings include: overnight camp and day camp for children, family camp weekends, and women’s wellness weekends.

“It was a wonderful day of fun, productive, and rewarding work,” Wende Knapp wrote.

Painting, gardening and spring cleaning at Tryon Park Estates

Xerox Day of Caring

A day of cleaning, painting and sprucing up for Xerox Corporate Marketing and Communications.

Corporate Marketing and Communications sent a crew to Tryon Park/Tryon Estates in Rochester, N.Y., which offers housing for people with traumatic brain injury. Upon arrival, they came upon paint, brushes, rakes, and assorted implements of sprucing up. The crew got to landscaping, staining a deck, picnic tables and front stairs, and some indoor spring cleaning.

Lollypop Farm cleans up for a new season

Xerox Day of Caring

Adding up the years everyone has participated in a Day of Caring event, the Xerox/Excellus crew netted 962. A random drawing of photos (like this) netted $250 for the  Lollypop Farm.

Lollypop Farm helps build lifelong bonds between people and animals through education, community outreach programs and the prevention of cruelty. The farm is run by the Humane Society of Greater Rochester.

About 100 people from our Technology Development Group joined forces with a crew from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. The scope of the projects assured their time was well-spent:

  1. Cleaned out and around a barn filled with “junk,” and made $250 from a scrap metal recycler.
  2. Cleared out trees and branches in and around an unused horse paddock so that it can be used this summer.

    Four truckloads of mulch.

  3. Sanded and varnished seven benches.
  4. Carpenters in the group built new feeding troughs for goats and nesting boxes for chickens.
  5. Cleaned out a two garage bays.
  6. Painted an office.
  7. Created small gift boxes for Lollypop’s upcoming gala.
  8. Built some obstacles for the equine training center.
  9. Spring cleanup — mowing, raking, pruning bushes, weeding, installing landscape fabric, spread (a lot of!) mulch, planted annuals, and spread stones on the pathways.

Renewed home for a farm animal rescue

Xerox Day of Caring

The peacock approves.

Build and hang new doors on a barn, replace wall panels on a cow barn, clean horse stalls, washed water buckets and horse blankets, sweep the horse barn, cleared brush on trails and in creeks, weed the gardens, paint and more. This was not a typical day for our people from our Consumables Development and Manufacturing Group.

They spent their day at the Cracker Box Palace, a farm animal rescue. They take in farm animals that have been abused, neglected or abandoned — horses, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, goats, rabbits and more.  Mary Novick, a Xerox retiree, heads up things at Cracker Box Palace.  “I used to let volunteers vote on where to go,” Wendy Richards wrote, “but after a few years with everyone voting for the Cracker Box Palace, we just sign up and go.”
