User Authentication With Express and Mongo – Dave McFarland and Jonathan Foster
Learn how to implement a custom user authentication system that controls users access to web resources using Node.js using Express and MongoDB. The system lets users sign up, log in, and log out, limiting access to password-protected resources. Express is a popular web framework for creating MVC applications and RESTful APIs in Node.js. Express lets developers define routes and middleware for submitting and retrieving data in our database. We will leverage the document based NoSQL database, MongoDB, to store our user data by creating a user model with mongoose. Mongoose is an open source Node package for defining data models for an application and connecting to MongoDB.
Displaying API Data with Collection Views in Objective-C – Gabe Nadel
In this course, you’ll learn how to display data in Collection Views by creating an app for browsing Instagram photos. In addition, we will learn the basics of the oAuth protocol, how to authenticate and sign into a service, how to download large files like images and much more!

Understanding Closures in JavaScript – Andrew Chalkley and Joel Kraft
In this workshop learn how closures are used to preserve data between function calls.
Unit Testing a Spring Application – Chris Ramacciotti
Though extensive knowledge about how to code a fancy Spring MVC application can impress a lot of folks, you’ll need to add unit testing to your app to ensure proper functionality and stability. During this workshop we’ll apply the unit testing knowledge you already have to a provided Spring application, testing our controllers, services, and DAOs. In addition, we’ll make use of mock objects to “fake” the functionality of application components that aren’t being directly tested.
Exploring JavaScript Conditionals – Andrew Chalkley and Joel Kraft
In this workshop, we’ll explore alternatives to if..then statements for controlling program flow. Even if you don’t end up using them, you will see these forms appear in other code bases, and it’s helpful to know how they work.
Debugging an Existing Java Application – Craig Dennis
We developers spend more than half our time maintaining code. In this course, you will get armed with some helpful debugging tools and practices that will help you navigate around an inherited project.
Kotlin for Java Developers – Ben Deitch (August 2016)
Kotlin is a newer language that runs in a JVM and can be used to develop Android apps. You can interweave Kotlin and Java in the same app, and it brings new features for better safety, readability, and tooling.
Introducing ES2015 – Guil Hernandez (August 2016)
Learn the basics of the ECMAScript 2015 JavaScript standard. JavaScript has come a long way since it’s inception in 1995. The ECMAScript 2015 specification brought a lot of improvements, the largest set of changes the language has seen to-date. In this course, we’ll review some of the new features and demonstrate how they can be used to build better JavaScript applications.

Social innovation has been a long term vision for Hitachi and Hitachi Data Systems. Today, that vision is embodied in our strategy for digital transformation. Digital transformation is a major focus as businesses face the disruptive forces of the third platform: social, mobile, analytics, and cloud. Add to this the growing adoption of the Internet of things, where operational data from sensors and machines is integrating with information technology to provide new opportunities for social innovation. Hitachi and Hitachi Data Systems is in the best position to help customers on their Digital Transformation journeys due to the strategy and vision we have been following over the past 12 years.
This strategy starts with the base building blocks, software defined infrastructure, content management, and information intelligence. As the model matured we added the cloud provisioning extensions, and the common advanced analytics platform for IoT verticals. The author of this strategy was Jack Domme. Having provided us with this strategy which has proven to be adaptable and effective for future growth, Jack has decided to leave Hitachi and move on to new challenges. We are grateful to Jack for his contributions to Hitachi and HDS that have positioned us for a bright future.
Back in 2003, Hitachi Data Systems was a high end storage company. We had excellent, highly reliable, hardware, but our management software was not the easiest to use, so we were looking for someone to lead our software operations. One day I was asked to interview a gentleman from StorageNetworks, a successful data storage services company that was being acquired by another company. It was clear that this person knew the software, networking and services business, but more importantly I was impressed with his vision for the future of information systems. That was Jack Domme.
Jack immediately began organizing our software operations, and won the respect of our Hitachi software developers with his clear communication of requirements and direction for our storage management software. He also brought in a team of managers, who now hold key positions in our future direction as one Hitachi: Brian Householder, currently the HDS COO for sales, marketing and business development, John Mansfield, President and CTO Hitachi Platform Division, and Hicham Abdessamad, the President and CEO at Hitachi Consulting.
With his successful leadership in software operations Jack was promoted to HDS COO in 2007, and then to CEO in 2008. During Jack’s seven-year tenure as CEO, he led the company through many significant changes rapidly moving HDS from being a storage provider to a full-fledged, global IT solutions company. With world-class engineering, marketing and sales, HDS now offers a full portfolio that includes infrastructure, content, information, analytics, applications and vertical industry solutions. HDS’ revenue mix has shifted from only 23% software and services to now more than 65% software and services in 2016 – building a more consistent annuity revenue stream for the company. Jack instilled a strong performance-based culture that has inspired staff around the world and won many awards even as the company has doubled in size. HDS has maintained a 100% track record of meeting or exceeding the annual HDS operating plan throughout the seven years even amidst a dynamic global economy, rapid changes in the IT industry and the transformation of HDS’ business model from a factory-out hardware company to a complete solutions company that enables digital transformation through enhanced data management, governance, mobility and analytics.
I speak for all my colleagues at HDS in thanking Jack for his many contributions to HDS that have brought us to where we are today and positions us for an even greater future. We thank Jack’s wife Karen and his four daughters who have had to put up with Jack’s crazy schedule during his time at HDS when he had to be called away from many family dinners and soccer practices. Most of all we thank him for instilling in us a performance based culture which will continue with our new CEO, Ryuichi Otsuki.
Mr. Otsuki is no stranger to me or to HDS. He has been a long-time supporter of Jack and his leadership team and is very familiar with HDS’ strategy from his previous role on the HDS board, and general manager of the Hitachi Social Innovation Promotion Division. In his internal announcement of Jacks departure, he thanked Jack for preparing us and for setting a strong course for our continuing success as we remain united and committed to his vision.
We wish Jack all the best in his future endeavors.

While not initially obvious, investment returns have an impact on the number of independent workers.
The reason is retirement, or more precisely the financial ability people have to retire. If future investment returns are low, fewer people will have the financial resources to retire or they will have to work longer before they retire.
One of the reasons we are forecasting increasing numbers of independent workers is a growing number of people are working past the traditional retirement age.
Some are doing this by choice, others out of financial necessity. But either way, older workers tend to want higher levels of work/life flexibility and control than younger workers. This makes independent work attractive.
Age discrimination also makes finding a traditional job harder, making independent work often the best, or even only, option.
Because of these reasons, working Americans aged 60+ have the highest self-employment rate of any age cohort, with about 25% reporting being self-employed. This is substantially higher than the overall self-employment rate of 10%.
So anything that results in more older Americans staying in the workforce also results in more independent workers.
Declining investment returns is an example.
According to McKinsey's New talent tensions in an era of lower investment returns, we're entering "an era of overall investment returns that are substantially lower than those of the past 30 years."
As the article chart below shows, McKinsey is forecasting that the average annual equity returns over the next 20 years will be between 1.5 and 4.0 percentage points lower than they were in the past 30 years.
Fixed-income returns are forecast to be lower by 3% to 5%.
This has huge implications on retirement savings. Key quote from the article:
A two-percentage-point difference in average returns over an extended period means that in order to live as well in retirement as would have been possible with higher returns, a 30-year-old today would have to either work seven years longer or almost double her savings rate.
Based on the current financial condition and savings of most Americans, I think it's safe to say relatively few will be doubling their retirement savings rate.
Instead, they're going to have to work longer and this means more independent workers.
BTW, McKinsey's not the only one suggesting future returns will be lower.
In recent weeks Blackrock (the world's largest money management firm), Singapore's sovereign wealth fund and others have also said they expect lower investment returns going forward.
Many Americans having already figured this out, which is one reason why more are planning on working longer.

Today, organizations can best defend against digital threats by practicing endpoint discovery. Knowing exactly which devices are installed on a network provides security professionals with key intelligence for effective incident response. Indeed, information security teams who lack that knowledge might fail to detect or contain an intrusion before it escalates into a breach. Endpoint discovery […]… Read More
