Google’s Cloud Firestore NoSQL database hits general availability

Google today announced that Cloud Firestore, its serverless NoSQL document database for mobile, web and IoT apps, is now generally available. In addition, Google is also introducing a few new features and bringing the service to ten new regions.

With this launch, Google is giving developers the option to run their databases in a single region. During the beta, developers had to use multi-region instances and while that obviously has some advantages with regard to resilience, it’s also more expensive and not every app needs to run in multiple regions.

“Some people don’t need the added reliability and durability of a multi-region application,” Google product manager Dan McGrath told me. “So for them, having a more cost-effective regional instance is very attractive, as well as data locality and being able to place a Cloud Firestore database as close as possible to their user base.”

The new regional instance pricing is up to 50 percent cheaper than the current multi-cloud instance prices. Which solution you pick does influence the SLA guarantee Google gives you, though. While the regional instances are still replicated within multiple zones inside the region, all of the data is still within a limited geographic area. Hence, Google promises 99.999 percent availability for multi-region instances and 99.99 percent availability for regional instances.

And talking about regions, Cloud Firestore is now available in ten new regions around the world. Firestore launched with a single location when it launched and added two more during the beta. With this, Firestore is now available in 13 locations (including the North America and Europe multi-region offerings). McGrath tells me Google is still in the planning phase for deciding the next phase of locations but he stressed that the current set provides pretty good coverage across the globe.

Also new in this release is deeper integration with Stackdriver, the Google Cloud monitoring service, which can now monitor read, write and delete operations in near-real time. McGrath also noted that Google plans to add the ability to query documents across collections and to increment database values without needing a transaction soon.

It’s worth noting that while Cloud Firestore falls under the Googe Firebase brand, which typically focuses on mobile developers, Firestore offers all of the usual client-side libraries for Compute Engine or Kubernetes Engine applications, too.

“If you’re looking for a more traditional NoSQL document database, then Cloud Firestore gives you a great solution that has all the benefits of not needing to manage the database at all,” McGrath said. “And then, through the Firebase SDK, you can use it as a more comprehensive back-end as a service that takes care of things like authentication for you.”

One of the advantages of Firestore is that it has extensive offline support, which makes it ideal for mobile developers but also IoT solutions. Maybe it’s no surprise then that Google is positioning it as a tool for both Google Cloud and Firebase users.

Visa Launches She’s Next to Support Female Entrepreneurs

In an exciting move to support female entrepreneurs, Visa announced a new program called “She’s Next”. This program is designed to help women who own small businesses grow and strengthen them. All over the world, women-owned businesses are increasing. According to Visa, over 163 million women have opened businesses since 2014 and Visa wants to help them all in unexpected ways.

“As women, we have the power to shape and transform our communities—through our purchasing power and also through the leadership and employment opportunities we offer as business owners. By joining forces with Visa, we will help build awareness of women-owned businesses, provide them with more opportunities and invest in women across the socioeconomic spectrum around the globe.” – Rebecca Minkoff

Training Opportunities for Female Entrepreneurs

“She’s Next” by Visa is offering female entrepreneurs several programs. But, the most exciting is the year-long training opportunities. The opportunities include pop-up events, interactive workshops, and access to experts.

  • The pop-ups will take place all over the world so women can network with and learn from other women entrepreneurs.
  • The interactive workshops will take place at major events, like the National Retail Federation’s  Big Show in New York, Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
  • The experts will come from businesses like Yelp and Square, as well as Visa, and they will share their innovative ideas at the pop-up events and the scheduled events.
  • Many of the workshop topics will help women better understand how to use digital marketing to grow their businesses.

The training opportunities were rooted in research. Visa found that women-owned businesses have struggles that businesses owned by men don’t necessarily have. Some of those concerns include:

  • 73% of women struggled to get funding to start their businesses.
  • 61% of women had to fund their own businesses.
  • 43% of women started businesses to get financial independence.

Visa will also begin a marketing campaign called “Money is Changing” that showcases millennial female business owners. The campaign will show how they opened their businesses and challenged stereotypes regarding women and money.

Financial Services that Support Female Entrepreneurs

The “She’s Next” campaign is also supported by the Female Founder Collective (FFC) that was developed in 2018 to support female business owners. The FFC has over 3,000 members who are able to support each other through networking and training opportunities. To further support female entrepreneurs, the Visa Foundation promised $20 million to the Women’s World Banking that promises to help women in several ways including,

  • Learning to develop, scale, and test sustainable products that are innovative.
  • Expand global financial services to underserved populations.
  • Collect and analyze data regarding the impact of financial services for female business owners.
  • Share innovative ideas to support micro enterprises around the world.

10 Resolutions to Make This Year

We’re a few weeks into 2019 and I think it’s safe to say we’re all settling into the New Year. Maybe 2018 wasn’t all you wanted it to be, so 2019 is your chance to give it another go. Don’t worry if you didn’t make any life-changing resolutions before the clock struck midnight on December 31st. Now is as good a time as ever to set some personal goals and make realistic resolutions. As a small business owner or entrepreneur, business usually comes first. But 2019 is the year to take care of you! Here are 10 resolutions to make this year:

Cut Back on Screen Time

We’re all guilty of spending too much time on our smartphones. You pick it up to check an email or a social media notification, but you get sucked in and end up spending (er, wasting) hours of your time mindlessly scrolling. As a business owner or entrepreneur, your time is money! That’s not to say that you should be spending the time you are mindlessly scrolling working. But, there are plenty of better ways you could be spending that time, especially when your time is a hot commodity.

We use analytics in small business all the time. So, why not use it to help you reign in your screen time? If you use Apple products, the new iOS update for iPhone tracks your screen time and updates you on your usage. You can set limits and your phone will let you know if you exceed them. If you are an Android user, there are plenty of great apps that you can install. Quality Time is a well-known and established free app that has similar features to the iOS tracking feature. It does things like gives you daily usage alerts, forced breaks.

Exercise More

Don’t roll your eyes, this one is important! A lot of people make exercising more a resolution each year, and most people don’t follow through. That’s because they’re making it a resolution for the wrong reasons, most notably to lose weight. And you don’t have to hit the gym hard 5 days a week at 5 am. You’re definitely not going to keep up with that resolution unless you are committed to making a major lifestyle change.

To make exercising one of your more attainable and realistic resolutions to make this year, find something you love to do. There are tons of activities that count as exercise that aren’t running or weight lifting, although those are great ways to get your body moving. Try things like cycling, yoga, a dance class, or simply commit to taking a short walk every day. Your body and your mind will thank you. Getting your sweat on makes it easier to focus when it’s time to get down to business.

Network

Get out there and get to know other small business owners, or professionals in your field, that are in your community. Having a strong network can be great for your personal and professional life. You might make some new business contacts or maybe some new friends. Set a goal of attending one networking event per month. Extra points if you host one yourself.

Plan Conferences

Planning ahead can be a glorious thing. Research what’s going on in your industry and register for a couple of conferences. If you register for them now, when the time comes to attend, you’ll have no excuses not to go. You can schedule all of your other commitments around them for the rest of the year. Conferences are a great way to keep up on industry best practices and to grow your network.

Do Something That Scares You

Think back to when you quit your 9-5 job to embark on your entrepreneurial or small business journey. That was scary. This year make it a resolution to get out of your comfort zone. Maybe volunteer to lead an event in your community, speak to local students about becoming an entrepreneur (kids are a tough crowd!), start a book club, try a new dish at your favorite restaurant, or invite your team to give you feedback on how you’re doing as the boss.

Give Back to Employees

Many people resolve to give back to their communities in the New Year. One way you can do that is to give back to your own employees. Make them feel appreciated. Plan office lunches (and take care of the bill), take a company-wide trip or morale outing or give them extra time off. You’ll feel good about taking care of your people, and as a bonus, you’ll probably see increased loyalty and performance.

Sleep More

Right up there with exercise, getting enough sleep has a huge impact on your performance. This is one of the resolutions to make this year that will yield results. The National Sleep Foundation says that lack of sleep can dramatically affect your work performance and that when you’re tired at work, “your brain is not as creative and won’t process information as quickly or retain important facts as well.” As the brains behind your business, you can’t afford not to get a good night’s sleep. Make it a priority this year.

Commit to a Schedule

One of your resolutions to make this year should be to prioritize and commit to a schedule. If you’re in search of that elusive work/life balance, this is where you need to start. Get a planner, use Google calendar or Microsoft Outlook calendar to keep track of your time. Try implementing a technique like schedule chunking to make the most out of the time you spend in the office and at home.

Learn a New Skill

Learning a new skill can be beneficial to your personal growth as well as your business. Even if the new skill you choose to learn isn’t directly related to your business, you’re still growing as an individual and as a leader.

Coworking Goes to the Dogs (it had to happen)

Allwork's DOG-FOCUSED COWORKING: A Q&A WITH WORK & WOOF FOUNDER JILLIAN DRETZKA talks about Work & Woof, a combo coworking and doggie day care space in Austin, Texas.

Dog friendly coworking is common.

But Work & Woof takes it to a whole new level. Over the half of the facility's space is an interior play yard for the dogs. There's outside play spaces too.

Work and woof

Work & Woof also offers grooming and doggy day care. Key quote from the article on these services:

"We do everything but cutting on-site, so nail trim, baths, blowouts, brushing, we do in that back room. We also do daycare for the day, so you don’t have to cowork and leave your dog, you can just leave your dog."

One-third of Work & Woof's members are dog entrepreneurs. The space even hosts dog entrepreneur meetups.

Regular readers know we closely follow both the pet humanization trend and the growth of niche and specialized coworking spaces

And from our point of view, it was just a matter of time before these trends merged.

If you're at all surprised that one-third of Work & Woof's members are dog entrepreneurs, see our Pet Trends section for more on the large and growing pet industry.

The Power to Prosper: 3 Pillars to Grow a Successful Business. Celebrating Intuit’s New Video

Running a small business is hard!  According to the US Small Business Administration, about one-third of businesses fail before the 2-year mark and about half don’t make it past 5 years. This failure rate applies equally across industries and economic climate.

There are a lot of reasons why a small business might not make it. But what about the reasons why they do make it?

I’ve beat the odds, 4 times in fact, and you can too! I’ve started 4 companies, all of which have been successful, and I’ve sold one. But I’ll be completely honest with you, it wasn’t always easy. In fact, it still isn’t easy, even for someone who has done it 4 times. I’m building some new businesses from the ground up right now, and even after all I’ve learned and gleaned over the years, it’s still tough! Despite the hardships, you don’t have to feel like you’re alone in the challenge of owning and running a small business.

In celebration of of this video, we wanted to share 3 simple and powerful pillars to starting and growing a successful business.

Leverage Technology

It’s no secret over here at smallbiztechnology.com that we wholeheartedly believe that technology is vital in order to grow a successful business. Keeping up with the latest tech trends can give your small business an edge over competitors. I was a technology consultant for several years and I have extensive hands-on experience in technologies across the board including social media, computer networks, mobile computing, online software and more. I’ve found that as I do the best I can to leverage technology from great partners such as

I can operate faster, smarter and more efficiently. Intuit is one of the leading brands helping small businesses succeed. A BIG company using their power to help us smaller businesses. I am an advocate and evangelist for these technologies for small businesses because I know from firsthand experience–they work!

Marketing

Without this fundamental strategy, your business isn’t going to make it very far. We’re not talking about billboards and sales flyers anymore. We’re talking about levering technology to draw more customers to engage with your business online. While traditional marking methods are still very much relevant and important, incorporating social media, video, and email campaigns can get your brand name out there. To grow a successful business, you need to keep the customers coming. Ignoring the importance of marketing an building a strong brand image could mean the difference between being in the 50% of small businesses who make it to 5 years or the 50% who don’t.

Financial Literacy

A key tenant of running a successful business is knowing how to manage money. It seems glaringly obvious, but so many small businesses get this wrong and never make it out of the red. You don’t have to have a PhD in Accounting to get your finances right. However, it is critical for business owners to understand the basics and to be able to read financial statements and understand the financial and tax implications of their business decisions. If you don’t already consider yourself financially literate, there’s no better time than now to get smart on small business financials. There are tons of resources, like Money Smart for Small Business provided by the FDIC, that can help get you up to speed for free.

If you’ve already got a handle on your business’s finances but are looking for some tools to make your life a little bit easier, partner with big businesses, like Intuit, who are committed to powering prosperity and helping small businesses grow. Intuit is powered by an “unrivaled set of small business data and sophisticated technology,” and they’re making these tools available to small business owners to “save them time, deliver more money and provide greater confidence in their financial decisions.” Just because you’re a small business doesn’t mean you have to operate in isolation because you’re not connected to the traditional financial system.
