Deloitte on the Alternative (Meaning Gig) Workforce

Deloitte's article The alternative workforce: It's now mainstream is taken from their 2019 Human Capital Trends report.

It covers the use of alternative labor - contractors, freelance/independent workers, gig, and crowd workers - by corporations.

Key quote on the their conclusions:

"... the alternative workforce is now a critical mainstay of the workforce for a growing number of employers."

The data in the article comes from Deloitte's annual global business survey. One of the key findings, as shown the article chart below (click to enlarge), is alternative workers perform a broad range of activities.

Deloitte's alternative workforce

They summarized the article by saying:

For many years, people viewed contract, freelance, and gig employment as “alternative work,” options considered supplementary to full-time jobs.

Today, this segment of the workforce has gone mainstream, and it needs to be managed strategically.

Given growing skills shortages and the low birth rate in many countries, leveraging and managing “alternative” workforces will become essential to business growth in the years ahead.

We certainly agree.
