Contingent Labor Comprises 38% of Corporate Workforces

Ardent Partners recently released their 2016-2017 State of Contingent Workforce Management report

The study is based on a survey and series of interviews with mostly HR and procurement professionals at large corporations.

According to the report, the use of contingent workers by corporations continues to grow and accounts for nearly 38 percent of all workers in 2016.

This is up from nearly 35 percent in 2015 and just 29 percent in 2011. This is a very fast growth rate by labor market standards.

Ardent is also suggesting it could be as high as 50% by 2020. This seems a bit high even given the fast growth rate over the past 5 years. But it also seems likely it will be at least in the low to mid 40% range by 2020.

As the study chart below shows, Ardent also found that most corporations are rethinking how work is done and making changes to adapt to the new economy.

Key quote:

A transformation in executive thinking: Sixty-three percent (63%) of organizations are currently rethinking how enterprise work is addressed. This shift, which is essentially digging into the very core of every corporate project and initiative and questioning legacy directions, represents perhaps the most considerable transformation in today’s business world.

The report and the findings make it clear corporations are increasingly recognizing that talent can come from a variety of non-employee sources.

It also makes it clear corporate use of non-employee talent is going to continue to grow.
