From Waiter to Programmer & Digital Content Manager: Jonathan Borteij’s Story

In his early 20s, Jonathan Borteij found himself without a college degree, working in a restaurant. It was a badly paid, stressful job that Jonathan didn’t enjoy, and he knew it was time to pursue an entirely new career path. That’s when Jonathan discovered Treehouse and began learning. This experience introduced him to the tech industry, which was a perfect fit for him.

Since then, Jonathan has worked as a programmer and now works as a digital content manager at one of the world’s largest ferry operators. Using his Treehouse knowledge, he has also earned 5 certifications from Google. With such a diverse resume of skills alongside his knowledge of digital strategies, Jonathan is starting out on an exciting career path, an opportunity that he credits Treehouse for helping him achieve.

We asked Jonathan to share his story.

jonathan

What first encouraged you to learn to code and pursue a career as a web developer?

I started programming when I was about 11 years old. I didn’t take it seriously, but it did establish my interest in the web and web development. I was curious about how the technology of the web worked and how I could use it to build things that I could use with my friends. However, at the time, there weren’t any platforms like Treehouse to learn how to code.

A few years ago, with the help of Treehouse, I began seriously learning to code and received my first job as a programmer. I was able to use all of the knowledge I had learned both in practice and in job interviews. Today I work at one of the world’s largest ferry operators companies as a digital content manager.

None of this would happen if it wasn’t for Treehouse, which is why I still used it a lot to grow my coding skills.

What were you doing when you first joined Treehouse and how did you integrate learning into your everyday life?

I worked at a restaurant. It was stressful and badly paid and I had to decide what I wanted to do with my life. I chose to learn computer programming so I could combine it with digital marketing. I don’t regret changing my career in my 20s. I earn a great salary each month and there aren’t many people my age in the same position without a college degree. But in the tech world, it’s possible.

There aren’t many people my age in the same position without a college degree. But in the tech world, it’s possible.

What has the value of a Treehouse education meant to you?

My Treehouse education has been extremely valuable to me, it has taught me all the basics, but it has also taught me how to create and build advanced skills. I also gained an extremely good understanding of SEO and have been able to help companies increase their revenues using digital strategies and SEO. One example is a wholesale company in Sweden that increased its turnover significantly in less than 2 years. So I guess my training at Treehouse has also meant a lot to the employers who have hired me!

What advice would you share with students who are just starting to learn to code?

The most important thing is to never to stop dreaming. Tech is the future, so invest in yourself and the knowledge, and keep on learning new technologies. Build a goal and make sure you reach it.

If you have a dream to start working as a web developer, be sure to follow your Treehouse lessons. Every time you get a notification email from Treehouse, make sure to complete the course. If you do not succeed with your quizzes and code challenges the first time, be sure to try again. You will find it difficult to understand syntax and code at the beginning, everybody does. But you will learn it, I promise.

The most important thing is to never to stop dreaming. Tech is the future, so invest in yourself and the knowledge, and keep on learning new technologies.

What are your plans for the future?

I will continue to work and keep learning new technologies. I have also received a lot of interest in my digital marketing skills. I plan to start a course at Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in digital marketing. They have one of the world’s best digital marketing programs. I would never have been able to take on an educational opportunity like this if I wasn’t well-paid as a developer. I’ll also continue learning with Treehouse, particularly as they’re great at sharing the latest tech industry news.

14 Important Things to Remember Before Your First Livestream

The Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) is an invite-only organization comprised of the world’s most promising young entrepreneurs. In partnership with Citi, YEC recently launched BusinessCollective, a free virtual mentorship program that helps millions of entrepreneurs start and grow businesses.

1. Be Your Authentic Self

lawrence watkinsPeople lose this part of themselves when livestreaming for the first time. If you are naturally energetic, be energetic! If you are naturally informative, share insightful information. There are many types of people doing livestreams and they all have their own style. Highlight your strengths from the start and then work on masking your weaknesses later on.

– Lawrence Watkins, Great Black Speakers

2. Watch Other Livestreams

Angela RuthWatch as many livestreams as possible first to see what you like and don’t like so that you can either incorporate them into what you do or avoid certain things. This benchmarking can vastly improve your delivery.

– Angela Ruth, Due

3. Consider the Impact of Background Noises

Adam SteeleSetting is huge. One thing I underestimated was the amount and intensity of the sounds you can tune out in a normal office that suddenly come through like wasps in a recording. Grinding road sounds and construction can ruin a whole take. You need to be somewhere as silent as possible when you begin.

– Adam Steele, The Magistrate

4. Script It and Practice It

Nicole MunozYou don’t need a full Shakespearean monologue, but you should have a well-rehearsed outline of what you want to communicate. Practice a few times with your video camera in front of you to get a good feel for what you look like and how you are conveying your message. Remember, 80% is how you say something rather than what you are actually saying.

– Nicole Munoz, Start Ranking Now

5. Create an Outline

Solomon ThimothyIf you’re going to livestream for the first time, it’s very important that you’re fully prepared. Have a set outline with key talking points that you’d like to address to stay on topic. There’s a lot of things that could go wrong when livestreaming, but being prepared will likely lead to a successful stream and help prevent any potential issues.

– Solomon Thimothy, OneIMS

6. Don’t Skimp on Technology

Diego OrjuelaJust because livestreaming removes the need for post-production editing and inherently communicates a more immediate, laidback method of communicating to an audience, don’t try to cut costs by using low-cost equipment. Professional cameras and high-quality audio equipment will easily increase the professionalism of your livestream.

– Diego Orjuela, Cables & Sensors

7. Plan for a Longer Video

Kenny NguyenWe’ve learned that if you’re only livestreaming for five to 10 minutes, you are not likely to get a large chunk of your audience. We recommend doing content that spans from 20 to 30 minutes, as people regularly check streams in intervals and you’re more likely to catch someone in the middle of your stream (especially for those just checking their Facebook). If your content is good, they’ll rewatch it.

– Kenny Nguyen, Big Fish Presentations

8. Invest in a Camera or Phone Stand

Adelyn ZhouInvest in a stand for the camera or phone for a steady video recording. Second to bad audio quality is shaky, fuzzy video, which gives the viewer a headache. Also, know which format you’re streaming in and position your camera for horizontal or vertical streams appropriately. For example, Facebook Live videos are horizontal but Snap Stories and Facebook Stories tend to be vertical.

– Adelyn Zhou, TOPBOTS

9. Keep Practicing

Karl KangurIf you haven’t done it before, being on camera might feel awkward. It’s OK, you’ll figure it out. The more you do it, the easier it gets, and you’ll find out what works and what doesn’t.

– Karl Kangur, MRR Media

10. Go Through Some Basic Media Training

Leila LewisBefore livestreaming, invest some time and money into media training. Hire a professional or watch tutorials on YouTube. You want to have some idea of what you are doing before broadcasting yourself to the world!

– Leila Lewis, Be Inspired PR

11. Make Sure Everything Is Working Beforehand

Erik BullenTest your sound and your camera. Ensure you have a reliable internet connection. Avoid making last-minute adjustments, and set everything up how you want it in advance of starting. That will help you get down to business.

– Erik Bullen, MageMail

12. Use the Right Lighting

Cody McLainA camera, any camera (not just an SRL or mirrorless camera) needs light in order to create vivid images. Just by playing around with lights, you can change the mood of a video, which is even more pertinent in a livestream. Most livestreams look dingy and miserable (with yellow undertones), and while I stick around because the content is interesting, it’s irritating. Invest in three-point lighting.

– Cody McLain, SupportNinja

13. Think of It As a Conversation

Cynthia JohnsonMake it fun and throw yourself into it so you come across as natural as possible. It’s easy to get nervous, but you will appear so stiff. Go with it and remind yourself that you are just having a conversation with someone you know well.

– Cynthia Johnson, Ipseity Media

14. Have Fun

Abhilash PatelNo one likes watching someone who is rigid and clearly reading a message. Get on camera, have fun and be yourself. People like seeing real-life, authentic faces — it allows them to relate to you even more and can inspire them in their lives.

– Abhilash Patel, Recovery Brands

Set the Page Free in the Modern Workplace: Tech and Success

By Gregory Pings

“Being a Xerox partner, we not only sell technology, we also use it to enable us to be more efficient and take care of our customers.”

Jeff Horn

“Technology connects us. Makes it easier to do business across more locations. But … you have to keep it in its lane so that it won’t dominate your day.” – Jeff Horn, President and CEO, Benchmark Business Solutions

Jeff Horn is president and CEO of Benchmark Business Solutions, which sells printers and managed document solutions in west Texas and eastern New Mexico. In his words, he’s responsible for the success or failure of the company.

Horn ticks off the top three things that help Benchmark succeed:

Great people: “I’m surrounded by them.”

Technology: “You can’t work without it, so it must be up and going.”

Mission: “You’ve got to have everyone pulling the rope in the same direction. They have to believe in the mission and work together.”

But technology always seems to take over the conversation.

Horn’s personal use of technology runs the gamut – cell phone, tablet, video chats, Bluetooth, mobile printing and more. His personal mission is to keep his inbox messages under 30. “But you gotta know when the time it takes to craft a good email response would be better spent on a good telephone conversation.”

And time is a factor. Oftentimes we have to act before we are able to fully communicate.

“Culture comes in here,” Horn said. “Make time to talk with partners and staff, but balance that with the need to act. Your company culture comes into the decision on what, when and how much to communicate.”

Tech, people & culture keep Xerox agency’s mission on track.

Click To Tweet

Mobility and the new rules of work

Horn freely admits Benchmark’s workplace isn’t modern in terms of open floor plans. About half of his people are in offices, the rest are in cubicles or sales bull pens.

“Open spaces are not comfortable for people like me who are about to turn 40,” Horn noted. “But it doesn’t matter what I want. What matters is what’s most attractive to my workers. They grew up in this environment and it helps them be more productive.”

(The Modern Workplace series will be published each Friday on Xerox Connect. Subscribe to this blog so you won’t miss a thing, or retrieve your favorite Modern Workplace articles here.)

But his office is modern in terms of technology. The mobile and open-ended nature of work underpin the Xerox notion of “set the page free.” You can’t wall people off, and you must promote a collaborative culture, particularly for employees who travel. Since work is no longer a 12 x 12 space, so it is that “the page” is not necessarily a piece of paper. “The page” is your database, a phone call, instant message, email – whatever it is that keeps you connected to your work, your colleagues, your partners and (let’s face it) your family.

“Changes in technology are fast-paced, and it can be difficult to keep up,” Horn pointed out. “The upside is that technology connects us. Makes it easier to do business across more locations. But technology has to be managed. You have to keep it in its lane so that it won’t dominate your day.”

Benchmark has been named the number one Xerox sales agency in the country several times, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Blue Ribbon Award winner in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Clearly, Horn and his employees know what it takes to succeed when you sell (and use) technology.

Don’t be Afraid to Break Your Code (Everyone Does)

Our instinct tells us that things shouldn’t be broken, but when it comes to coding, reverse that thought process. Regardless of what type (and level) of developer you are, coding relies on using a programming language to solve a problem, so naturally problem-solving is the most valuable skill you can have. So what’s the best way to improve your problem-solving skills? Find out what does and doesn’t work. Put your ideas to the test. Break your code and put it back together. In the world of developers, that’s what everyone does.

Find out what does and doesn’t work. Put your ideas to the test. Break your code and put it back together. In the world of developers, that’s what everyone does.

So how should you approach solving a problem with code? Guest teacher, Mat Helme published a great article on Medium called the Four P’s to problem-solving: Prep, Plan, Perform and Perfect. I’d recommend spending some time reading through his article and putting them into practice. (Hint: steps 3 and 4 are where you’ll break your code.)

  • Step 1: Prep. Assess the problem that you’re trying to solve and establish an initial, high-level solution.
  • Step 2: Plan. Think about how you’re going to tackle the problem and the steps you’ll need to take to reach the solution.
  • Step 3: Perform. This is when you’ll put your plan into action.
  • Step 4: Perfect. Your initial plan may not give you the desired result, and that’s okay. Revisit your code, continue to iterate on your plan in different ways. Once you reach the solution you’ll be proud of what you’ve built.

Something else to remember is what makes the problems you’re trying to solve more interesting is that there is often more than one way to solve them. Your solution may be different from another developer’s, and that’s okay. As a community, developers have a strong culture of collaboration. Think of open source software, which is everywhere (WordPress, the framework we use for this blog is open source, as is the language its build with, PHP. You can learn how to use both on Treehouse!).

Whether you’re new to coding or a veteran, by now you’ll also know that becoming a developer isn’t easy. It involves hard work, dedication and a commitment to being a lifelong problem-solver and learner. But, what’s also important is to back yourself and your coding knowledge. As Treehouse teacher, Kenneth Love explains, “not knowing something doesn’t make you a bad programmer. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be in technology or writing code. And it absolutely doesn’t make you an impostor.” Instead, know that you have the skills to solve the problem and that you’re part of a global community of programmers who experience the same challenges as you.

Not knowing something doesn’t make you a bad programmer. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be in technology or writing code. And it absolutely doesn’t make you an impostor.

In fact, next time you feel defeated by an error in your code and want to give up, take solace in knowing that thousands of developers are sharing your frustrations and overcoming them. Instead of being defeated, take a break from your code, return with determination and approach the problem from a new angle. Then, when you experience that rewarding feeling when your code runs error free, celebrate (you deserve it).

Now go out there, take on your next project and don’t be afraid to break your code.

Seven Things You Should Know About Starting a Small Business

Starting a new business venture is very exciting – and nerve wracking. However, there are several things you can do to help make your way through the fog and find success as you launch, build and grow your business. Take a look at these seven tips to help you start your small business.

Ignore the statistics.

People will always share the scary statistics – only one in five businesses survive past their first year of operation, and half no longer exist after five years. Do not listen to those people. They throw around those statistics to give you an easy out if you want to throw in the towel. Many people start businesses and don’t commit, or they fail to learn how to manage their money. Don’t worry about the odds that aren’t in your favor. Focus on the odds that are.

Start a business that focuses on something you care about.

Don’t start a business that you want to do temporarily. Think about what you’ll still enjoying doing in five or ten years. Why? Because hopefully you are successful, and if so, you’ll be running this same business in five or ten years.

You won’t know everything.

Truth be told, you won’t know a lot when you start. Go ahead and start anyway. You’ll learn as you go along, figuring things out based on real life experiences or with the help of mentors. Don’t let your fears stand in the way of starting that business you’ve always dreamed of. You’ll learn which tools start-ups need to succeed and how to best manage others. Give yourself time and don’t be afraid to ask other successful business owners for help.

Don’t partner with just anyone.

Select your partner with care. Partner with a person because he or she makes you stronger. The wrong partner will make the business you’ve dreamed of not be the business you’ve dreamed up. They may cause more problems that they’re worth and you could end up not enjoying your work.

Learn all about financing options before you leap.

Starting a business means you need to secure small business financing options and there’s a good chance you aren’t sure where to begin. From SBA loans to merchant cash advance to business lines of credit, the type of financing you utilize to pursue your business can have a profound impact on the future of your business. Take your time and evaluate your options so you can learn about financing for small businesses so you can make an informed decision.

Realize there’s a difference between dedication and obsession.

Go ahead and go on past that line of dedication. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are too obsessed or overly passionate about anything, especially your business idea. It’s okay and a good thing if you feel so strongly about something. That obsession will help you find success and not throw in the towel when the going gets tough.

Read books as often as possible.

Make it a point to sit down and read. If you don’t have time, listen to audio books in the car or when you’re completing other tasks. Read more than just business books. Read self-help books, motivational books, fiction books, and biographies – anything and everything you can get your hands on.

Entrepreneurship can be a little scary. The tips above can help you navigate your way through the uncharted territory of business ownership with some confidence.
