Innovations in Fintech

State Street Corporation’s Advanced Technology Research Centres in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and Asia Pacific (APAC), University College Cork (UCC) and Zhejiang University (ZJU), are proving that higher education and business organizations can successfully conduct R&D that benefits both academia and business. The joint research efforts have informed and benefited multiple stakeholders in the financial services ecosystem, including international standards bodies, customers, other financial services companies, and academia on how to efficiently integrate various fintech technologies, platforms, and systems together.

Cutter Business Technology Journal recently published an issue dedicated to some of this research. The four articles included focus on semantic ontologies, next-generation robo-advisors, tools supporting internationalization and localization of legacy systems, and 3D visual analytics. Philip O’Reilly, Cutter Senior Consultant and Director of the State Street Advanced Technology Centre at University College Cork set the stage for the four articles about some of the key technologies — semantic ontologies, next-generation robo-advisors, tools supporting internationalization and localization of legacy systems, and 3D visual analytics — that will be of significant relevance to the future of financial services and, potentially, other domains. He writes:

In this dynamic and rapidly evolving ecosystem, efficiently and effectively integrating data from the multiplicity of systems that exist is a significant challenge. Furthermore, CIOs and CTOs must continuously wrestle with the dilemma of when to invest — and in what technologies. Therefore, they face ongoing issues pertaining to standards and systems integration. This is where semantic technologies can play a key role. Through applying semantic technologies and adding a semantics layer to an organization’s IT architecture, the organization’s data can remain in its existing system (legacy information system, data warehouse, database, Excel file, etc.) and its existing format (structured, unstructured). By using triple store database technology, data can be transformed into RDF graphs, an industry standard model for data interchange. A critical advantage of this approach is that an organization does not need to copy the entirety of the data universe into a triple store database; only data necessary for the specific use case is transformed.

This approach creates a map of an organization’s data, encompassing its characteristics — specifically its data types, properties, and interrelationships — together with an explicit specification of the intended meaning of the vocabulary. Therefore, the semantic data model, through associating meaning with each piece of data, enables faster, better data analysis. The critical advantage of semantic ontologies is not just that they enable data to remain in its host system, but that they also support data standards, facilitating much greater levels of interorganizational data interchange. Furthermore, semantic technologies can play a vital part in dynamically identifying anomalies in an organization’s data set through the utilization of inference engines. Among other things, this enables much better data quality for regulatory reporting.

The semantic ontologies approach has huge business value. Critically, when the next generation of fintech technology comes along, an organization won’t have to undertake expensive system migration projects. For example, while semantic ontologies can be applied to existing systems, they will also help to maximize organizational value from distributed ledger (aka blockchain) technology.

Due to their potential for disruption, blockchain-based systems are attracting a massive amount of interest and investment. However, blockchain technology in and of itself does not address core issues pertaining to data quality and seamlessly facilitating exchange of data that may exist off chain. Therefore, R&D efforts are now looking beyond blockchain as a standalone technology, focusing on how a semantic layer can sit upon a blockchain-based system. A critical advantage of this approach is that it would facilitate a standard semantics-based data dictionary for multiorganizational data and assist with data quality issues, thereby offering a much stronger business case for the implementation of this technology.

In the context of decision support, robo-advisors have received a great deal of attention for their potential to assist both individual and institutional investors with their investments. Indeed, much of the recent focus has been on how these technologies should be operationalized, be it in a fully automated online model or via a hybrid model, whereby the technology is utilized by investment advisors to better inform their clients. Yet from a usability perspective, most of these systems are limited in that their interfaces are typically two-dimensional and text-based. Looking toward the design of the next generation of robo-advisors, researchers are exploring how big data, analytics, and 3D visualization techniques can be combined and integrated to operationalize greater analytical and predictive value. Not only is it possible to use these systems to track the performance of “star traders” and efficiently communicate and illustrate this using 3D visualization techniques, these systems can also predict the future of investment markets. By combining technologies, such systems will play a critical role in decision support by visually informing investors’ investment decisions.

HCP: An Integrated Data Portfolio For Digital Transformation

Digital transformation is the transformation of business activities and processes that fully leverage the capabilities and opportunities of new digital technologies. There are many cases of companies who have adopted new technologies but have not transformed their business process or business model to fully leverage the technology. An example is a bank who adopts mobile technology so that a loan request can be entered on a mobile app. While the mobile app is easy to use, it can still take weeks to approve and process the loan if the back office processes are not changed. This puts them at a disadvantage when competing with Fintech companies who can process a loan request in two days.

Fintech companies have an advantage in that they are technology companies that were born in the cloud and do not have the legacy that traditional financial companies have. In order to compete, traditional companies must take a bi-modal approach to digital transformation. They must continue to enhance and modernize their core applications while they transition to new systems of innovation. In the case of the bank processing loans they need to have access to more information in order to evaluate the credit worthiness of the applicant. If that information is locked up in different silos, it will be difficult to provide the agility required to shorten the loan process.

Traditional companies may have an advantage over Fintechs, if they can unlock the wealth of data that is already in their legacy systems. The key to success will be the ability to free the data from their legacy silos, and use them to augment new sources of data that can be analyzed to create new business opportunities. Object storage with its rich metadata capabilities, open interfaces, and scalability can eliminate these silos. However, no single object storage product can do it all from mobile, to edge, to cloud, to core. There must be an integrated portfolio of object management products that can optimize and modernize the traditional core systems while activating and innovating new business processes with technologies like cloud, mobile, analytics, and big data. The lack of an integrated approach will create increased complexity and costs.

Hitachi Content Platform (HCP) is an object storage solution that enables IT organizations and cloud service providers to store, share, sync, protect, preserve, analyze and retrieve file data from a single system. Version 8 is the latest version of the object storage repository. The HCP repository is usually mirrored across two site to provide availability and eliminate the need for back up. Geo Protection services has been added which essentially does an erasure coding of objects across three to six sites, so that data is protected when any site fails. It also uses less storage capacity than full replication of data. With erasure coding across three site you save 25% capacity compared to mirroring, and with six sites you can save up to 40%. Erasure coding will impact retrieval time so provisions are made to retain mirrored copies for a specified time. The support for KVM, the use of 10TB drives in the storage nodes, a 55% increase in objects per node and simplified licensing has been added to improve the TCO of private cloud by over 60% over public cloud for enterprise use cases.

Hitachi Data Ingestor (HDI) is an elastic- scale, backup-free cloud file server with advanced storage and data management capabilities. It appears as a standard NFS or CIFS server to a user but every file is replicated over HTTP to an HCP so it does not require backup. When the local storage begins to reach a threshold, the older files are stubbed out to HCP so it appears to be a bottomless filer. HDI v6.1 has been enhanced with R/W content sharing and universal file migration improvements.

HCP Anywhere provides file synchronization and sharing on mobile devices with end user data protection and mobile device management to increase productivity and reduce risks in a secure, simple and smart way. Version 3 provides next generation Windows client with VDI support and thin client desktop client (selective caching and Synching). There are also enhancements for data protection, collaboration, and usability such as Android app enhancements. You can use “My Documents” as HCP Anywhere directory and protect your files from ransom ware. Any alteration of your file would be stored as a new version, so recovery would simply be a matter of accessing the previous version.

Hitachi Content Intelligence was announced in 4Q 2016 and is now available for general availability and rounds out the HCP portfolio with a new data analytics and recommendation capability. With Content Intelligence, organizations can connect to and aggregate data from siloed repositories, transforming and enriching data as it’s processed and centralizing the results for authorized users to access. By balancing our existing HCP Portfolio, Hitachi is now the only object storage vendor in the market with seamlessly integrated cloud-file gateway, enterprise file synchronization and sharing, and big data exploration and analytics. HCI is capable of connecting to and indexing data that resides on HCP, HDI, HCP Anywhere, and cloud repositories. Once data repositories are connected HCI supports multiple processing workflows for analytics, extraction, transformation and enrichment stages that can be applied as your data is processed.

Despite Strong Job Market, Economic Uncertainty Still High

We consider the trend towards rising levels of economic uncertainty and insecurity to be one of most powerful trends we follow. We also think it's one of the least studied and understood.

A combination of factors drive economic uncertainty. These include relatively slow growth, stagnant wages, middle class job losses and declining job security.

In addition, a growing amount of research also points to income volatility as a cause of economic uncertainty.

The New York Times article Steady Jobs, With Pay and Hours That Are Anything But covers research by the JP Morgan Chase Institute showing that income volatility, while most pronounced for those with lower income, is common across all earning levels.

The excellent article chart below (click to enlarge) nicely summarizes this data.

Key quote from the article:

“Since the 1970s, steady work that pays a predictable and living wage has become increasingly difficult to find,” said Jonathan Morduch, a director of the U.S. Financial Diaries project, an in-depth study of 235 low- and moderate-income households. “This shift has left many more families vulnerable to income volatility.”

The article points the main culprit is shifting pay and variable work hours at a growing number of traditional jobs.

This fits with the findings of The 2017 edition of the Intuit On-Demand Economy Workforce study.

This study found a large percentage of gig workers are doing gig work supplement their income in response to financial shocks and/or income volatility associated with their primary source of income.

Key quote from the Aspen Institute's New Findings Reveal the On-Demand Economy Plays Key Role in Improving People’s Financial Stability, which covered the Intuit study:

... income volatility is growing and more Americans are facing financial hardships and shocks than in the past. Second, it’s clear that our traditional safety nets are not working as well as they need to.

Because of this, a growing number of Americans are turning to gig work to help them work through a financial hardship or smooth volatile income streams.

In other words, the gig economy is being used as an alternative safety net for many gig workers.

This is not to say there aren't income volatility issues with gig work. There clearly are, especially for those working full-time in the gig economy.

But for the majority of gig workers who work part-time or occasionally in the gig economy, the gig economy reduces instead of causes income volatility.

Economic uncertainty has a number of effects. It leads people to avoid long term or major commitments, both in their personal lives and as consumers.

Examples include delayed and lower rates of marriage, having children and home ownership. It also leads to a resistance to large purchases of all kinds. All of these have major impacts on the economy.
